Drifters Inn accommodation is located in Hanmer Springs in the South Island of New Zealand. Hanmer Springs is an alpine village in North Canterbury which is situated close to Mount Isobelle in the foothills of the Southern Alps.

Hanmer Springs is:

From Christchurch

1.5 - 2 hours drive north of Christchurch (approx 130 km) – take the SH1 motorway north and change to motorway SH7 at Waipara, 25 minutes out of Culverden change to motorway SH7A.

From Picton / Kaikoura (Inland Route)

a 2.25 hours drive south of Picton on SH1 to Kaikoura. Inland Road Route (2 hours); 10 minutes south of Kaikoura turn left off SH1 onto the Inland Road, driving through Mt Furneaux, Linton Downs, Hawk Hills, up to Mount Lyford Village, then from Mount Lyford Village driving through Whales Back Ridge, Annandale, Clarence Valley down into Waiau. Through the village of Waiau, over the Waiau River, towards Rotherham village, once through village on Rotherham Road South, past the school and the Cob cottage, 6 minutes driving take the right onto Flintofts Road towards a T-intersection, turn right onto ‘Mouse Point Road’ on to SH7. Driving on the SH7 for 20 minutes through Montrose, Marble Point to just beyond a ‘Y’ intersection turn right off SH7 onto SH7A and head over the Historic Ferry Bridge at Waiau Canyon driving for 10 minutes the 9 km on Hanmer Springs Road into the Hanmer Village. (Beautifully picturesque route, although windy – drivers enjoy!).

From Picton / Kaikoura (Leader Waiau Road Route)

Alternative route from Kaikoura, The Leader Waiau Road; drive for 50 minutes south Kaikoura on SH1 through Goose Bay, Oaro, into the Hundelees over the Conway River, through Glen Colwyn. After the Glen on SH1, south of Hawkeswood Road on to your right but before Parnasus; is a left turn inland onto the Leader Waiau Road; Follow this into Waiau Village. Through the village of Waiau, over the Waiau River, towards Rotherham village, once through village on Rotherham Road South, past the school and the Cob cottage 6 minutes take the right onto Flintofts Road towards a T-intersection, turn right onto ‘Mouse Point Road’ on to SH7; Driving on the SH7 for 20 minutes driving through Montrose, Marble Point to just beyond a ‘Y’ intersection turn right off SH7 onto SH7a and head over the Historic Ferry Bridge at Waiau Canyon driving for 10 minutes the 9 km on Hanmer Springs Road into the Hanmer Village. (Better option if driving late in the day and losing light, as easy road to manouvre.)


Where is Drifter’s Inn?

Once you arrive in Hanmer Springs, it’s straight forward to find the Drifter’s Inn: we are in the centre of the village, 80 metres walk from the famous Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa (formally referred to as Thermal Reserve). On your approach to the historic tree lined avenue we are located on the Corner of Harrogate and Amuri Ave, (the 2nd right turn, on the main street, just before the pools). If you get to the monkey puzzle tree in the middle of the village green you have gone three lamp posts too far.
